What's Your Story? Building Your Business through the Art of Storytelling

Our lives are made up of stories.

We share stories over the backyard fence about raising teenagers.

* “My daughter was out past her curfew and I knew I shouldn’t have trusted that kid she was dating. The guy with the baggy pants that looked like they were gonna fall down!”

We paint pictures with words when we’re sharing memories at family reunions.

* “Remember when we snuck out of the house and went skinny dipping down by the creek?”

Everyone likes to hear a good story, but there are some key elements to telling a good one. Here are some suggestions that will bring your story out.

* Give it real emotion and human interest. Some personality types have energetic voices; some are more monotone and flat. Ask for feedback from those who will give you their honest opinion.

* Tell it like a story. Your business story is more than molecular structures of your products or the percentages on your levels. When you see people yawning in your audience, it may be that your presentation is duller than dirt.

* Be genuine. This is YOUR story. It has to be credible and not pie-in-the-sky. It shouldn’t sound like it came out of a network marketing textbook.

* Use colorful adjectives and adverbs instead of tired, overused ones. Let your words reflect your personality and passion.

* Be succinct. A story can start out really good, but if it goes on and on people will start looking at their watches. Rambling is a sure fire way to have people moving towards the door. Keep it short enough to hold their attention.

* Write your story down and practice it until you become comfortable sharing it. The hours you spend practicing it in front of the bathroom mirror will be well worth it.

Your story is the most POWERFUL tool you have in your toolbox. Your story is YOU!
